Residents of the Melrose and Glenridge neighborhoods are ready for April showers with the completion of the Lisa Street Detention Basin.

The Cape Girardeau Public Works Department identified the Lisa Street Detention Basin as a priority item several years ago but the funding was not available. When voters passed the sales tax to benefit the stormwater abatement fund in August 2008, the City acted quickly.

The watershed is covered by homes, streets, and other surfaces that do not absorb water. Streets and walkways would often flood in this area. The rush of storm water draining into a nearby stream would also cause erosion. The new basin will hold storm water and release it slowly. Flooding and erosion will be reduced.

The $95,000 project included contracts with Smith & Company's Cape Girardeau office and Jim Goggin Excavating.
