Keep Families Together attracts protesters locally, nationwide

Freedom Corner at Capaha Park in Cape Girardeau was the perfect symbolic spot for the Keep Families Together rally Saturday, June 30. The local rally, organized by Cape resident Aaron Lerma, was also part of a national movement. More than 30,000 marched in New York City, according to NBC, with banners bearing Families Belong Together slogans.

NBC News also reported, "More than 600 marches occurred throughout the country, from liberal, immigrant-friendly cities like New York and Los Angeles to more conservative regions like Appalachia and Wyoming. American expats even gathered across from the U.S. consulate in Munich."

In addition to hosting a voter registration station, participants also heard from Missouri House 147th candidate Renita Green. Lerma also read clips from immigrant stories.

While it was hot for the Cape Girardeau event, participants were mindful of the children who are being held in tents in Texas and how hot they must be 24 hours a day.
