Jefferson Elementary School's innovative Backpack Program received a big boost recently when Sharon Polito of United Commercial Travelers (UTC), center right, presented a check for $500 to Jamie Jones, Jefferson parent liaison, center left, and Jefferson Principal Christa Turner, right. Also present for the donation was Amanda Winschel, left, children's program manager, Southeast Missouri Food Bank.
UCT members are active contributors in support of cancer research, intellectual disabilities, youth programs and special needs of the local community. UTC members work with community leaders to improve education, housing, and self-development programs. The Jefferson Elementary Backpack Program is a cooperative effort of Jefferson Elementary, Southeast Missouri Food Bank and donors such as UTC to provide nutritious meals to disadvantaged families in the school's attendance area. More than 48 Jefferson children are enrolled in the Backpack Program. This is the second time UTC has supported the Backpack Program. Ms. Jones said the UTC donation will support two children for the rest of the school year.
