CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. -- Pvt. John Hensel, of Cape Girardeau, recently completed his military training to become a light-wheeled vehicle mechanic for Missouri National Guard's Forward Support Company of the 1140th Engineer Battalion in Cape Girardeau.
"I joined the Guard because I have always wanted to serve my country," Hensel said. He also joined for the education benefits, but pride in his country guided him to the military.
He graduated from basic training at Fort Jackson, S.C., June 22, 2010, and graduated from advanced individual training at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md., Nov. 19, 2010.
Prior to training, Hensel served with Company E of the Recruit Sustainment program in Cape Girardeau. Through the program, he learned basic Army skills and values and became more familiar with his role as a Soldier in the Missouri Army National Guard.
Staff Sgt. Jeremy McGuire, recruiter at the Cape Girardeau armory, said Hensel will be a very dedicated Soldier for the company. McGuire is particularly proud of Hensel's commitment and resolve to complete the Army National Guard's "GED Plus Program", where Hensel received his GED in a 2-week course at Camp Robinson, Ark.
"He has a lot of determination and discipline," said McGuire. "The Forward Support Company's mission is to help maintain and sustain all the companies of the battalion, and he'll be a great addition to fulfilling this difficult mission."
Hensel is the son of James Wensel, of Ellington, Mo, and Julia Schrum, of Cape Girardeau.
