The Roaring Recyclers (6th grade group 1) in the Central Middle School is working with the Lexus Eco Challenge to change Cape Girardeau in a positive way. We are trying to get more people in Cape Girardeau to recycle regularly. Our original plan was to get recycling bins in three major parks but after contacting the Solid Waste Management we came to realise that the public would need more education before recycling bins could be added to the parks. So, instead we changed our idea to just spreading awareness to the public. Our main goal is for the recycling rates in Cape Girardeau to go up. Most of the students did research outside by going to parks and observing recycling items in the trash cans. Several students walked to public areas and got signatures from people that were there trying to get recycling in the parks. In total we have around 150 signatures. We also got pictures to prove how much trash was getting thrown away when it could have been recycled. Even though our focus shifted our main goal is still to get recycling in the parks, maybe we can make it happen with further education.
