CHIPPING ICE IS BACK BREAKING WORK

As a chemical engineer, I would rather find an easier way to clear ice than just chipping away with a shovel. During last winter's (2008) 4 inch ice storm, I spent a very frustrating day clearing away Mother Nature's driveway iceberg. That is not an experience I want to re-live. That's why I decided to restock a former ice melt product called Ice Fighter Plus. Yes It's back.

This ice melt has a special coating on the crystal called Propolyice which is a polymer or plastic. As Ice Fighter Plus bores through the snow and ice, the Propolyice combines with the melted water to form a polymer barrier which reduces the amount of liquid entering the pores of concrete. Freezing damage to concrete is caused when water from melting snow and ice is absorbed into the concrete. Although other ice melters chemically do not harm concrete, they do nothing to protect the concrete from the main cause of damage-freezing water. The Propolyice reduces flaking and spalling up to 80%.

This latest storm has created a challenging four inch ice layer to clear, so I had to run an experiment to find a less frustrating method of cleaning the concrete. Here is my proven way to remove this winter's sidewalk glacier. First, we shovelled off the top 3 inches os snow. Then we applied the Ice Fighter Plus at the ice rate of 1 cup per square yard. We let the Ice Fighter Plus break through the snow for about two hours. Next we removed the top slush layer with a shovel and reapplied another coating of Ice Fighter Plus. Once again, we let the ice Fighter Plus work for about 3 hours. Then we were able to remove that bottom layer of ice. Although some ice shipping was necessary, it was much easier and required less time. For thicker snow/sleet/ice layer, just repeat the process.
