Financing law enforcement is always a major issue in rural counties. How would you save money for your department?

I have discussed the sheriff's budget with county officials and there is not an issue with the sheriff's budget at this time. Currently, the sheriff's office returns a portion of their budget to the county. In this time that law enforcement finds itself under attack by forces unknown, I would anticipate the need for updated equipment and training, but within the budget as set by the county commission.

If elected, what improvements would you make in the department?

My department will be active in the community. We will increase visibility. All of my deputies, except detectives, will wear a uniform, including me, and drive marked patrol cars. I want to enhance the School Resource Officer Program. I want a canine unit for the county to combat the growing drug problem. I will work with the Cape and Jackson Police Departments on a daily basis. The phones will be answered by an employee.

Do you feel the sheriff's department has a good reputation? How would you preserve or improve on that reputation?

As I've walked the county, people tell me one thing. "If you get elected, don't be a stranger". I will take that good advise and remain active in the community on a daily basis. I will strive to be a public servant to all members of the community. I want my deputies to interact with the public as well. Community interaction will be a very high priority for me. The public will know us.

What is the biggest crime problem in Cape Girardeau County?

Burglary and theft are the biggest problem. These types of crimes are how most drug users support their habit. They are also very difficult crimes to solve. As sheriff I will demand that my deputies respond in person to each burglary and theft call. In an effort to reduce these crimes I will have deputies doing proactive patrolling. High visibility should deter some of these crimes. Faster response times should help in preserving evidence.

Closing remarks

I want to be your full time law enforcement professional sheriff. I am not a career politician. I am not seeking a higher political office nor a political appointment. I believe that people are tired of career politicians and are ready for fresh ideas. I have been all over the county knocking on doors and meeting people and asking for their votes. I've met some really great people. Please vote for me on August 2nd.
