Few businesses in Cape Girardeau or elsewhere are able to mark an 81st birthday, but Broadway Prescription Shop at 710 Broadway will celebrate this month. Rather than receiving birthday gifts, the month-long celebration will culminate with the pharmacy giving away an Apple iPad Mini.
Owner Lee Schlitt explains, "We feel so fortunate to have experienced such success in the two years we have owned the pharmacy, we just wanted to find a way to say thank you. The iPad helps remind people that even though Broadway Prescription Shop has been here for 81 years, we embrace the latest technology and intend to be around long into the future."
One example of how the pharmacy utilizes technology is a relatively new mobile device app that allows customers to renew and track prescriptions. Last fall Schlitt, pharmacist and co-owner Kevin Wood, and employees, Jen Cecich and Melissa Hoehne, attended a three-day seminar to master the many capabilities of the app.
Schlitt explains, "This app offers so much more to our clients than just an easy way to refill a prescription. It helps keep track of everything they are taking, when all prescriptions need refilling or require a call to the doctor; they can see any possible side effects. It's just a very helpful tool in medication management."
Additional services offered by Broadway Prescription Shop include an online refill option via their website (www.BroadwayPharm.com), bubble packaging called the Personal Pack to help patients and caregivers easily track dosage, compounded prescriptions in various forms to make taking them easier, and Broadway LTC, which provides personalized medication management to long-term care facilities.
Cape native Homer George founded Broadway Prescription Shop in 1932 and eventually passed it onto his sons, Milton and Harry. Schlitt and Wood, both graduates of Southeast Missouri State University and Leadership Cape, purchased the pharmacy in 2011. The shop has doubled sales since the new owners took over, and the new owners credit much of their success to carrying on the commitment to excellence established by the George family. Schlitt adds, "The Georges have been very helpful and encouraging. They have continued their commitment to the community by helping us learn to do all that we can for our customers."
Apparently, their efforts are working; last year Broadway Prescription Shop was voted as the People's Choice for Best Community Pharmacy and earned the Business of Excellence award from Old Town Cape. Recently, Broadway was featured on the cover of America's Pharmacist, a national publication that goes to more than 23,000 community pharmacies across the country.
Wood explains, "Our tag line, 'Personalized care for life' isn't just an advertising slogan; it's our mission. Every day we strive to find new ways to increase the quality of life for our customers and be a partner in their personalized care for life. We are extremely grateful to our customers for the success we have experienced. We are excited about this opportunity to give a little something back, and we look forward to many more years in the community."
The pharmacy is offering multiple ways to be entered into the drawing for the iPad Mini. One way is for customers to download the refill app or register online if they do not have a mobile device. However, no purchase is necessary to be entered into the drawing. Everyone following the pharmacy's Facebook page will be entered, and anyone can come into the store to complete an entry form. The drawing will be held in the pharmacy on July 10th. Additional details about the iPad Mini giveaway can be found on the pharmacy's Facebook page and at www.Broadwaypharm.com.
