Southeast Missouri State University Art Academy Workshops - Summer 2013

The Art Academy Workshops are engaging and fun learning experiences in a wide variety of media designed to enrich one's personal vision for ages 6 through adult. All the workshops, except Mural at the Mall, are held in the Southeast Missouri State University Art Studios under the guidance of experienced and highly qualified master art instructors and art professors. Each instructor will also have a Southeast Art Education student assistant. All classes are limited to 15 students. Student work will be on exhibit at the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri through the month of August. Opening Reception will be held August 2, 2013 from 5-9 p.m.

Art Workshops for Ages 6-9

Prints Galore! Fun! Fun! Fun! -- July 8-12 -- 9:00 a.m. -noon (ages 6-9) Children will enjoy using their imagination to create stamp, stencil, and relief prints.-- Instructor: Susan Lane, Serena Building, room 312. Fee: $90.

ART Workshops for Ages 10-15

Mural at the Mall - June 24-28-- 1:00- 4:00 p.m. (ages 10-18) Students will work with professional master mural artist Craig Thomas in designing and painting a mural at West Park Mall using acrylic paint. Students are encouraged to wear paint clothes and bring snacks and drink. West Park Mall. Fee: $90.

Fabulous Fairy Tales and Fables- July 8-12 -- 1:00 -4:00 p.m. (ages 10-15). If you want your children to be intelligent, read them fairy tales. If you want them to be more intelligent, read them more fairy tales." Albert Einstein. Everyone has a favorite fairy tale or fable story! Join us as we explore how illustrators throughout the world have shaped our view of these classic stories then use colored pencils, inks and watercolor to create illustrations of your own favorite fairy tale, fable or legend. Come prepared with your favorite story---maybe even one you've written! Instructor -- Andrea Schneider, Serena Building room 312. Fee: $90.

Sculpture July 22-26- 1:00-4:00 p.m. (ages 10-15) Students will investigate multiple sculpture techniques using a variety of art media to create three dimensional artworks. Instructor: Debbie Bollinger Serena Building, room 312. Fee: $90.

ART Workshops for Ages 16 to adult (for graduate credit contact chorst@semo.edu )

Large Scale Drawing - June 17 & 18 - from- 6:30-9:00 p.m. (ages 16 to adult)-- Expand your drawings into life-sized images and spaces. No drawing experience required. Students will cover basic drawing skills such as gesture drawing, positive/negative shape and space, composition, value tones, line sensitivity and perceptual accuracy with University Drawing Professor Kathy Smith, River Campus Room 042. Fee: $50.

Portable Paintings - July 8, 9, 10 from 1-4 p.m. (ages 16 to adult)-Join us for this fun, informative workshop focusing on the tradition of modern graffiti and street art! We will examine the properties of color and composition, develop personal symbolism and text elements, and investigate the materials of acrylic paint and static vinyl. The workshop will culminate in a final "portable painting", ready for public display with University Art Professor Emily Booth. River Campus Room, 039. Fee: $50.

From Cover to Cover: A Hand-Stitched Book -- July 15 & 16 from 6:30-9:00 p.m. (ages 16 to adult) Students will create a 6" x 9" hand stitched book or journal with University Art Professor and Department Chair Caroline Kahler, River Campus Room 034. Fee: $50.

Deadline for registration is three weeks prior to each workshop. Total payment is due with registration. Phone registrations will not be accepted. Notification will be sent to confirm workshop enrollment. Need based scholarships are available -- contact chorst@semo.edu. Refunds may be given minus a 10% cancellation processing fee up to one week prior to the start of the workshop. If a workshop is cancelled, registrants will be notified and given the option of transferring to another workshop or receiving a full refund.
