To the editor:

Smoking among people today is creating much controversy. Feelings are mixed. There is substantial proof that many people are harmed by smoking. On the other hand, just as many people who have smoked from a very young age to their senior years have not been harmed. Fate has it for some, luck for others.

Bill Emerson, who smoked for many years, died of lung cancer. On the other hand, George Burns smoked an average of 15 cigars a day and lived to a ripe old age. Regardless of whether one smokes cigarettes, pipe or cigars, it all contains nicotine. However, that does not mean it is detrimental to the health of all people.

As for as birth defects are concerned, just as many babies are born with defects from mothers who have never smoked as to those who have smoked. That is a confirmed fact. Thus, smoking appears to be a little over-emphasized as totally harmful.

Tobacco growers are being hit hard, with some looking for other ways of earning a living if this upheaval continues.

Liquor establishments are being questioned also. We need a certain amount of liquor for various foods like flambes and fruitcakes. Back in 1900 liquor was used for medicinal purposes when antibiotics were not yet in use. Doctors used liquor to combat blood poisoning. That is what saved my mother's life when my twin sister and I were born.

It all boils down to the fact that everything in life can be used to excess. Control and regulation are the answer.
