LETTERS: JOHN DEERE LIMITS SALES DUE TO METH

To the editor:

The photo of John Deere starting fluid that accompanied the article "Area businesses join in meth fight" by Jeffrey Jackson published in the YELL paper certain caught our attention.

As a local John Deere dealer, we became aware of heavy traffic and increased sales of John Deere ether, by the case, in the summer of 1996. At that time, information about methamphetamine production was not as widely spread as it is today. Imagine the surprise to find a product normally stocked on our display shelves was being used in the manufacturing of a dangerous drug.

John Deere starting fluid was taken off our showroom shelves two years ago. A customer must now ask for the product, and the amount purchased is limited. This action has reduced sales to our regular customers, for the product is no longer an impulse item.

We realize that our effort has done little in the fight against meth. However, we no longer accommodate the producers.
