LETTERS: LEGISLATORS WORK AGAINST HCR 12

To the editor:

We would like to thank the many constituents for taking the time to contact our offices concerning HCR 12, the House resolution sponsored by state Rep. Roy Holland, R-Springfield, and co-sponsored by local legislators Mary Kasten, R-Cape Girardeau, and Pat Naeger, R-Perryville, that would support efforts to privatize our Social Security system.

Opposition to HCR 12 has been overwhelming. Please know that we are not only opposed to this resolution, but are working hard to prevent it from passing.

For the last 63 years our Social Security system has ensured that working families are not financially devastated when the wage earner retires, becomes disabled or dies. Without Social Security, over half of our nation's seniors would be living in poverty, and almost a million Missourians would have a harder time making ends meet.

We will continue to fight to protect Social Security and urge you to remain vocal as well. Contact your friends and neighbors and call or write the sponsors of this bill to let them know how concerned you are about preserving Social Security.

STATE REP. MARILYN WILLIAMS, D-Dudley, STATE REP. LARRY THOMASON, D-Kennett, and STATE REP. JOE HECKEMEYER, D-Sikeston
