LETTERS: CONSTITUTIONAL CHANGE NEEDED ON GAY MARRIAGES

To the editor:

This letter addresses the comments that Dennis Giszczak of Lansing, Mich., made concerning Gov. Bob Holden's signing a ban on same-sex marriages. Giszczak said Holden's action showed bigotry and ignorance. Either Giszczak does not know what homosexual groups are doing, or he wants to perpetuate the lie that their legal maneuvering is harmless to society.

Evan Wolfson, the attorney leading the legal effort for homosexuals, is quoted, "As long as society has an institution that limits who can enter it based on their sexual orientation, it is discriminatory and wrong." He also predicts that within five years homosexuals will be able to go to a state that has approved of homosexual marriages then return to their home state demanding that their marriage be recognized.

There are 34 states that have passed defense-of-marriage laws. But legal experts warn that these laws are flawed. The U.S. Constitution's full-faith-and-credit clause says a legally binding contract valid in one state must be recognized by the other states. That is a very creative concept, and it is being used to help destroy our society.

We are in need of a constitutional amendment, one that states in language as unambiguous as possible that marriage in these United States shall consist only of the union of a man and a woman.

Marriage and the family are the foundations of our society and culture. Let us not just let them be washed away in the tide of political correctness.
