MOTHER QUESTIONS GAY DISPLAY IN PARK

This article comes from our electronic archive and has not been reviewed. It may contain glitches.

Dear Editor:

I have never written to the paper before. However, as I was driving my two children through Cape County Park last night to view the beautiful light display, I saw something so distressing that I felt I had to voice my opinion.

I am a proud citizen of Cape Girardeau and feel the team effort that provides the lighting display is exceptional. I was shocked, however, when I saw the "Gay and Lesbian Association" had decorated a tree. How do you explain to a four year old about the Gay and Lesbian Association?

I grew up in Southeast Missouri, was educated in the schools and am proud to raise my family in a city that exemplifies morality, values and safety. I feel we are bombarded daily through television and movies with sex, drugs, and "alternate lifestyles." It is very difficult to try to raise children with Christian values when everywhere you look we are falsely lead to believe that sex with the same sex is "normal."

According to my Bible, the definition of gay has not changed; it is not an acceptable lifestyle according to our Creator. The individual is loved by God because he/she is a human being and worthy, but the lifestyle is not acceptable.

Why do we have to blatantly expose our families to such immoral lifestyles as allowing the Gay and Lesbian Association to be an "acceptable" participant in our County Park light display?

A concerned mother,
