RIVERFEST GIVES CHANCE FOR MANY CELEBRATIONS

A majestic tourist attraction, the Mississippi River, draws people from all over the world to its bank. The river provides a fitting backdrop for Cape Girardeau's annual Riverfest celebration.

But Riverfest isn't limited to praises of our river heritage. It's a community gathering, a bonafide family-oriented festival. And perhaps that's been the secret to Riverfest's long-term success. The festival marks its 14th year in 1992.

Riverfest offers activities for all ages. To meet growing demand, children's programming has expanded each year. A children's parade, Little Miss Riverfest contest, and a special riverboat cruise just for kids are additions this year.

Entertainment will also appeal to all tastes ranging from blues to country to rock and roll. An enthusiastic response to riverboat cruises last year spurred a repeat performance with increased outings. The public's feelings about the boat's return are clear: Most of the cruises are expected to sell out again. Again, this shows that Riverfest organizers are interested in public appeal and serving a wide audience.

Riverfest also provides an opportunity to showcase Cape Girardeau's downtown. This historic region of town has proved a good home for the celebration. The business district continues to develop, with several new shops this year. Merchants and homeowners also continue to make improvements through renovations. The downtown area is finding its niche with specialty shops, antiques, restaurants and entertainment. A new downtown pavilion will be home to a farmer's market and other events.

A colorful fireworks display will bring two days of family fun to a close. The results are typically breathtaking as the pyrotechnics reflect off the mighty Mississippi.

Riverfest provides us many opportunities for celebration. This weekend, let us join together to salute our river heritage, historic downtown and family fun. It's a chance to escape the toils of everyday routine and really enjoy the delights of summer.
