FIREFIGHTERS HONORED FOR SPECIAL SERVICE

Public servants answer the call of service for many reasons.

Too often, people take their efforts for granted.

Two Cape Girardeau firefighters were honored recently for their exceptional service to the community.

Capt. Steve Niswonger was recognized with the Star of Merit Award for his volunteer efforts to create and continuously upgrade a street index used by firefighters to locate houses. His efforts have no doubt reduced precious minutes and seconds off response time for fire and medical calls. He was also praised for developing and maintaining a list of standpipe-sprinkler buildings in the city that helps firefighters control fires more quickly.

David McLain was also honored for his volunteer work the past four years as adviser to Boy Scout Explorer Post 911. The post involves both boys and girls in topics relating to firefighting and emergency service.

These awards are a wonderful way to pay tribute to these fine men and remind us all of the contributions of firefighters, policeman and other dedicated public servants. The community should provide a collective pat on the back to these men for their contributions to safety, health and education.
