Pep rallies for athletics are commonplace. But cheers and all-school recognition for academic excellence are being held as well.

Central High School last week honored more than half of the student body during its third annual Academic Pep Rally. That is an impressive number.

The Renaissance Club deserves credit for its role as sponsor of the local event. Such rallies mesh well with the club's goals to raise academic performance and school spirit.

The fact that so many students earn recognition doesn't make it any less special. These students well know the hard work it takes to excel academically.

A pat on the back helps students feel good about their school. Standing in front of your peers for this recognition goes a long way to underscoring the importance of academic excellence in our public schools.

A relatively small group of students will excel in athletics at any one school. But all can join in the celebration of academic achievement.
