Let the Christmas festivities begin

It's Christmastime, and the area is looking festive.

There are plenty of sights and sounds of the season. From Christmas concerts to light displays to live Nativities, many people in the area go all out this time of year.

Here are a few things to check out:

* The Hutson's Fine Furniture window is decorated. This is an annual tradition, and this year's exhibit looks back at 70 years of Christmas memories. It's worth a trip, or two, or three to fully appreciate this display.

* Jackson Holiday Extravaganza kicked off on Friday in the Jackson City Park. This, too, is a festive display worth a visit.

* Cape County Park's light display is available for a driving tour.

* Downtown Cape Girardeau will hold an open house from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday. There will be carriage rides, caroling by local church choirs, community groups and schools plus pictures with Santa. There also will be a shopping contest with an opportunity to win a downtown Cape Girardeau shopping spree valued at $1,500. To participate in the contest, shoppers visit the registration booth and then submit a ticket to the participating locations.

* The Parade of Lights in downtown Cape Girardeau was rescheduled to this Sunday due to rain last week. Join the fun along Broadway leading to Hutson's Fine Furniture at 5 p.m. Sunday. And don't forget about the Kim McDowell Memorial Toybox Run before the parade. The run will start at Southeast Hospital parking lot at the corner of Broadway and West End Boulevard at 4:55 p.m. The finish is at the corner of Broadway and Main Street. All proceeds will go to Toybox. First 100 finishers will receive an ornament.

There are many other events this month. Visit semoevents.com for more information or check out Page 2 in the Southeast Missourian. We wish you a joyous Christmas.
