Be safe as hunting season begins

The photos from bow season have likely popped up on your social media feed as avid hunters head to the woods.

This weekend starts firearm season for hunting deer. For some, it's about the hunting and processing the meet for personal use or charity. For others, there is an added bonus of spending time in the woods with friends and family.

A story in today's Southeast Missourian looks at hunting, with perspective from hunters and those who oppose it. You can read about numbers from 2013 and information on how to share your harvest this year with local food banks.

Whether you're a hunter heading to the woods or driving in an area where deer are located, we encourage you to use good judgment and be safe. Firearm safety is a given, but dress accordingly.

Those who are not hunting should be alert as deer activity increases. Keep an eye out as deer may cross busy streets. Being alert can make the difference.
