Relay for Life

Most of us have been touched at some point, directly or through a family member, by cancer. With ongoing research, medical advances and awareness events, more folks diagnosed are surviving and living lives of purpose. Joyce Penny is one of these individuals.

A cancer survivor, Penny was named a Hero of Hope for the American Cancer Society last year and is using her platform to speak to groups and help with Relay for Life. As part of her training through the Hero of Hope program, Penny set a goal of bringing Colleges Against Cancer to Southeast Missouri State University.

Through her efforts she learned the school already had a chapter, but with a renewed interest among the students the school will host its first Relay for Life beginning at 6 p.m. today. The 12-hour event will held at an intramural field on Sprigg Street. Penny said in the event of inclement weather the event will move indoors to the university's recreation center.

As of Thursday morning, Penny said 17 teams were registered with 136 students planning to participate. About $8,000 has been raised, and the group is looking to bring in more funds.

Relay for Life is a successful event for many communities. Penny said the Cape Girardeau event held in June usually raises about $200,000. Having another event locally that involves the university not only helps in the fundraising effort but also in spreading awareness to college students and others.

Hats off to Penny, the students and all those who help with events like this. While this Relay for Life draws student participation, it's also open to the public. Please consider how you might participate.
