Michelle Needs a Superhero!!!

Michelle and daughter Addy at last year's event

Michelle's Story:

Scott City native, Michelle Bundy, in her early twenties was expecting her second child a little over 2 years ago when she began having terrible pain, not related to the pregnancy. Soon after her little boy, Bentley was born (4 weeks early) Michelle was diagnosed with epithelioid angiosarcoma, a highly aggressive, incurable cancer. Doctors told her the prognosis was not good. With no health or life insurance and no hope of ever working again, the single mother's financial outlook was also grim. Family and friends got together and came up with a plan to raise funds. We wanted to help Michelle with the costs of getting back and forth to St. Louis for her treatments, pay her rent, and provide a little extra money so she and the kids could enjoy some quality family time as long as her health could hold out. Michelle also expressed a desire to have 'something for my kids later' and something for her final expenses.

Thus the first Annual Michelle Bundy 5K was born! Jessica McClendon (my daughter) had experience running in 5k's and decided this would be a good way to raise a little cash for Michelle and her kids. The community showed up in droves last year and completely blew us away with their generosity!! With the help of sponsors, runners and people who just walked up and donated funds, the Michelle Bundy Cancer fund has been able to pay Michelle' rent for nearly a year, monthly travel expense along with some of the day care expenses for the kids, due to Michelle's condition. We also presented Michelle and the kids a pass last year for Discovery Playhouse in Cape, so they could enjoy some quality fun time, time many of us take for granted.

Michelle is currently hospitalized again and our funds are running out. We want to continue help as much as we can financially and take some of the burden off Michelle and her family. Michelle's future is very uncertain and we know all funds we are able to raise will be used for her comfort and the care of her two young children.

In planning this year's 5K we wanted to include kids and families, since that is the spirit of this fund to begin with, so we came up with the theme, 'Michelle Needs a Superhero!' We have added to our activities a Fun-Run-Walk for kids, families and pets! Superhero costumes are encouraged and there will be prizes for the best costumes! Besides raising funds for Michelle we want to also raise awareness in young families, that time with our kids is precious time and memories made are sometimes all we have. Hopefully some of the younger participants will also learn that helping others is a mission we should all include in our daily lives.

We will of course still have the official 5K, with the timing provided by Cape Road Runners, with ribbons awarded. Goddard Photography will be there for photos. We are currently still looking for sponsors so I am including a copy of the sponsorship letter and a copy of the registration form. Thank you for your interest in our cause.
