Thanks for Fort D support

On Aug. 6, 1861, the fortifications were begun at Fort D in Cape Girardeau. On Aug. 6 and 7, 2011, 150 years later, the fort was again a bustle of activity. History came alive for the hundreds of visitors from nine states and the country of Taiwan as the 70-plus re-enactors shared their impressions of Civil War camp life.

The community supported the evening events hearing a storyteller, period music and a nighttime firing of the cannons. Our thanks goes to the many Friends of Fort D volunteers and the following sponsors for making this event such a success: Cape Girardeau Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Turner Brigade, Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation Department, Civil War Roundtable of Cape Girardeau, Port Cape Girardeau Restaurant, Southern/BiState Oil Co., Buckner Brewing Co., Schnucks, Wal-Mart, Target, Food Giant, Save-A-Lot, Toni's Flower House, Sunny Hill Nursery and Houch's Donuts.

As the sesquicentennial of the Civil War continues, readers are encouraged to visit Fort D and other Civil War sites in Cape Girardeau to learn more about our city's storied past.
