Zonta awards

Several women were recognized at the annual Zonta Women of Achievement luncheon on Friday.

Grace Hoover, recipient of the first Lifetime Achievement Award, was a professor of economics at Southeast Missouri State University from 1962 to 1990 and the first director of the Center for Aging and Gerontology Studies at the university. Hoover is also a past recipient of the Southeast Faculty and Alumni Merit Awards.

Jeannie Hirsch Blaylock, the Celebration Award recipient, is a co-anchor of the First Coast News in Jacksonville, Florida. Blaylock was a valedictorian at Cape Girardeau Central High School and graduated cum laude from William Jewell College. She has also won 16 Emmy Awards. Blaylock is also known for contributing to the creation of the "Buddy Check 12" program to support early detection of breast cancer.

Heather Brooks, the 2010 Woman of Achievement Award recipient, is the Cape Girardeau assistant city manager. Brooks serves on the board of directors for the United Way of Southeast Missouri and Old Town Cape. In addition to her membership with the local Zonta Club, Brooks is also involved in the DREAM Development Team, Community Improvement District Committee, River Corridor Connections Group, Bicycle Committee and Girardeau Goes Green Advisory Board.

Other nominees for the 2010 Woman of Achievement Award were: Avon Crocker, Raelenna Ferguson, Nancy Jernigan, Shelba Branscum, Deborah Gahan and Jane Cooper Stacy.
