Football weekend

Football in Southeast Missouri has been exciting this year.

The Southeast Missouri State football team's win against Austin Peay Saturday night propelled the Redhawks to No. 13 in two national polls released this week. The Redhawks look to continue their winning streak into Saturday's 1 p.m. home game against Eastern Kentucky.

Southeast will not be the only Cape Girardeau team playing at Houck Stadium over the next few days. The Cape Girardeau Central High School football team will face Sikeston at 7 Thursday night at Houck Stadium. Both Central and Sikeston are undefeated this year with records of 8-0. This is the first time Central has started their season 8-0 since 1972.

Central coach Rich Payne has done a tremendous job with a team that went 0-10 last season.

The Thursday night performance should draw fans from around Southeast Missouri, as most of the high school contests will be on Friday night. This showdown of undefeated teams will be a game to watch.

One Cape Girardeau football team having a turnaround season is reason to be happy. To have both the Southeast and Central teams consistently winning is a reason to celebrate.

Congratulations to both teams.
