Fall weather

The arrival of cooler weather is always welcome, but after this year's parching summer the drop in temperatures and humidity is especially refreshing.

Fall-weather activities start with the SEMO District Fair in Cape Girardeau, which seems to always herald the weather transition with a good soaking rain. The weather has been outstanding for this year's fairgoers.

This is the time of year when area orchards become popular destinations. There's nothing so fine as a bright, cool day punctuated with the smell of freshly picked apples. And this is also the start of the annual pumpkin harvest. Some of you also will be looking for brightly colored and strangely shaped gourds.

This weather is good for walking. There is an abundance of trails, both in cities like Cape Girardeau and Jackson and in the Ozarks. Find your favorite and enjoy.

What a great time for a picnic. If you were inclined to stay indoors this summer to stay cool, now is the time to get out.

And then there are the football games that seem just right for putting on a jacket on these fine cool evenings.

All this means fall foliage is right around the corner.
