Urge legislators to override veto of abortion bill

To the editor:

On Sept. 10, the Woman's Right to Act will be voted on again. This bill was passed with a bipartisan vote during the Missouri Legislature's regular session. Gov. Bob Holden vetoed the bill. In several committee hearings on this bill, post-abortive women from all parts of Missouri testified that they were not seen by a physician prior to their abortion. This bill calls for a 24-hour wait for a woman to get an abortion after she has talked with her doctor.

Normally most abortion clinics keep the doctor away until the time of the procedure. Can a decision to abort be between a woman and her doctor when the doctor is kept away?

The Supreme Court has said that the restriction of a waiting period before an abortion does not place an undue burden on a woman's ability to get an abortion. Because human-life issues are involved, contemplating an abortion needs proper consideration and informed consent. Often, a teenager makes a quick desperate decision to abort her unborn baby without even having to inform her parents.

Please take action. Call you state senator and state representative. Urge them to support and vote for House Bill 156.

Also, attend the Rally for Life at the Capitol from noon Sept. 10 until the votes are cast.
