Scott City's pride

Springtime is when we really notice the eyesores: trash, litter, dilapidated buildings, abandoned vehicles -- all of which are in stark contrast to the natural color and beauty of the season. A fresh season of green leaves and grass bring out the best of our beautification instincts.

Scott City has taken advantage of this urge to spruce up for several years now, and the effort is having an impact on improving the community's image. The thousands of motorists who go through the Interstate 55 interchange at Scott City certainly appreciate the efforts of prisoners assigned by the police chief to pick up litter.

The mayor, Tim Porch, and council members believe dealing with eyesores will have a communitywide impact by not only improving the looks of Scott City, but also inspiring residents to take action on their own.

Community pride is one of the biggest motivators when it comes to beautification efforts. Hats off to everyone in Scott City who is willing to do something about it.
