Meadow Heights' Ethan Mayfield stepped to the line with 1.7 seconds left and his team down two.

Mayfield nailed the front end of the 1-and-1, but missed the second shot.

Zalma snagged the rebound for the 77-76 victory in the semifinal round of the Mississippi Valley Conference tournament Thursday in Zalma.

"It was a hard-fought battle," Zalma coach Steve Wells said. "Meadow Heights played tough, hard. We were 3 of 14 from the line in the first half, but we shot much better in the second half."

Stephen Simmers dropped in 24 points, while Justin Stotts added 22 to lead Zalma. Nick Smith chipped in 12 points.

Dustin Hubler had a game-high 25 points and Derrick Wilfong netted 14 for Meadow Heights. Tyler Welker added 13 and Mayfield added 10.

The Bulldogs square off against Leopold in the final tonight.

"It will be a tough challenge," Wells said. "They are a very good basketball team."

Stoddard County tournament

Top-seeded Bernie routed No. 8 Woodland 80-41 as the weather-delayed tournament finally opened at Bloomfield High School.

Kyle Reynolds scored 20 points for Woodland.

Jake Owens scored 18 points to pace three Bernie players in double figures.

In other first-round action, No. 2 Advance defeated No. 7 Puxico 61-56. No statistics were reported from that game.

First-round games will conclude Saturday when No. 4 Bell City faces No. 5 Bloomfield at 4:30 p.m., and No. 3 Dexter meets No. 6 Richland at 6 p.m.

Jackson earned wins in seven individual events and two relays to finish first at a four-team meet in Perryville.

Katie Garner led the way for Jackson with victories in the 200 freestyle, 100 butterfly and was a member on both winning relays.

Allison Hobbs also captured two first places, in the 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke, and swam a leg on the two winning relays.

St. Vincent captured first in the 200 medley relay, and Anna Esswein tallied a first in the 100 breaststroke.

Jackson won the meet with 197 points, followed by St. Vincent (117), Saxony Lutheran (101) and Perryville (99).
