Yankees use long ball to sweep Twins

MINNEAPOLIS -- Five Yankees in a span of eight batters hit home runs and Mike Mussina was tough on the Twins again for New York in a 10-4 victory Sunday and three-game sweep of Minnesota.

Joe Torre became the 17th manager in history to win 1,500 games, and the Yankees had 18 hits to win their sixth straight -- all on the road. They swept their first series at the Metrodome since May 17-19, 1993.

Jorge Posada and Robin Ventura hit back-to-back homers in the fourth and Nick Johnson and Derek Jeter hit solo shots in the fifth against Twins starter Rick Reed (4-2).

Jason Giambi hit the most impressive of all the homers -- a two-run blast in the fifth off Jack Cressend that landed in the upper deck in right field and gave New York a 7-0 lead.

Mussina (5-2) gave up four runs and eight hits in 7 2-3 innings. He struck out nine without a walk to improve to 18-2 against the Twins in 21 career starts.

Angels 5, White Sox 4

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Troy Glaus stepped up after an intentional walk and singled home the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, lifting Anaheim.

The Angels won their fifth in a row and sent Chicago to its fourth straight loss.

White Sox closer Keith Foulke (0-2), who has not pitched in a save situation in Chicago's last 17 games, hit David Eckstein on the left leg with two outs in the ninth.

Eckstein stole second and Darin Erstad was intentionally walked. Glaus followed with a line single to left on an 0-1 pitch.

Troy Percival (2-1) got credit for the victory with a hitless ninth.

Royals 4, Indians 1

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Paul Byrd won again as Kansas City posted its first three-game sweep at home over Cleveland in nearly 17 years.

Byrd (6-2) tied Mark Buehrle of the Chicago White Sox for the AL victory lead and lowered his ERA to 2.77.

Byrd gave up five hits and struck out five in six innings. Jim Thome homered in the sixth to snap Byrd's streak of 16 scoreless innings.

Roberto Hernandez worked the ninth for his third save in as many opportunities and the 297th of his career.

The Royals' last three-game sweep at home over Cleveland came on July 26-28, 1985.

Kansas City scored four times in the first off Chuck Finley (2-4), highlighted by Mark Quinn's two-run double in his first at-bat of the season. Quinn, who also singled in the eighth, had been on the disabled list with a broken right rib.

Blue Jays 11, Athletics 4

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Carlos Delgado homered twice and Eric Hinske added a two-run shot to lead Toronto.

Delgado hit a two-run homer in the fifth off Cory Lidle (1-5) and added a three-run shot in the ninth off former Toronto closer Billy Koch.

It is Delgado's second multihomer game in the past four days. He hit two against Seattle on Thursday and has 11 homers this season.

Roy Halladay (3-1) allowed two runs and six hits in 7 1-3 innings for the Blue Jays, who have won just four of their last 11 games.

Terrence Long hit an RBI double for the slumping A's, which has lost eight of 10.

Devil Rays 6, Orioles 3

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- John Flaherty and Jared Sandberg hit RBI doubles during a three-run fourth-inning as Tampa Bay won its second straight game.

Tampa Bay ended a franchise-record 15-game losing streak Saturday by scoring four runs in the ninth inning to beat the Orioles 6-4.

The Devil Rays have won consecutive games for the first time since winning three in a row April 21-24.

Paul Wilson (2-3) allowed three runs -- one earned -- and nine hits over seven innings to end a personal three-game losing streak. Esteban Yan got the final three outs for his fifth save.

Baltimore starter Sidney Ponson (2-3) gave up five runs and nine hits in 6 2-3 innings. He struck out eight.

Rangers 5, Tigers 1

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Chan Ho Park finally pitched in Texas, throwing five innings in his first start off the disabled list, and the Rangers posted their fourth straight win.

Park (1-1), the prized free agent right-hander signed by the Rangers during the offseason, allowed one run and four hits and had four strikeouts.

Herbert Perry had three singles and scored twice and Alex Rodriguez added an RBI double for the Rangers, who at 18-19 are within one game of .500 for the first time since Park lost the season opener at Oakland on April 1.

Park (1-1), who had been on the DL with a pulled right hamstring, threw 53 of his 78 pitches for strikes.

Red Sox 10, Mariners 4

SEATTLE -- Pedro Martinez struck out a season-high 12 as Boston began a long stretch without slugger Manny Ramirez by beating Seattle.

Ramirez, batting .372 with nine homers and 35 RBIs, will miss at least 4-to-6 weeks with a broken left index finger.

The Red Sox had 16 hits and seven doubles, including three by Jason Varitek.

Martinez (5-0) allowed one run and four hits in eight innings to match his longest outing of the year.
