Matt Wulfers belted three home runs and drove in seven runs Monday to lead Notre Dame to a wild 15-10 baseball victory over visiting Kelly.

The Bulldogs improved to 2-1 overall and 2-0 in the SEMO Conference. The Hawks fell to 1-3 and 0-3.

"Matt had a day," Notre Dame coach Jeff Graviett said. "The wind was blowing out, but he hit the ball real well."

Notre Dame pounded out 17 hits. Jeff Brosey joined Wulfers in going 3-for-4 and added a home run. Kyle Diveley doubled and tripled while Dustin Tatum and Lee Essner each added two hits.

Jared Jinkerson was the winning pitcher, in relief. He allowed one hit and one run in 2 2/3 innings, with five strikeouts.

Kent Deason homered for Kelly, which had eight hits.

Trailing 7-2, Kelly rallied for a 9-7 lead with a seven-run fourth inning. Notre Dame tied it with two in its fourth, then went ahead for good with a six-run sixth.

NMCC 7, Scott City 5

Scott City led 5-0 after four innings but could not hold on and lost its season opener to host New Madrid County Central.

Rams starter Tyler Ward went four innings, but due to three walks and three hit batters was taken out after reaching his 80-pitch count.

Reliever Daniel Braun was roughed up for six runs in less than two innings, with a big three-run home run in the sixth the decisive blow. Mark Johnston went 2-for-3 for the Rams.

Leopold 2, Scott Central 1

Kevin Holzum doubled, singled and had two RBIs to help lead Leopold past visiting Scott County Central in the season opener for both squads.

Brandon Bueter pitched, the victory striking out 10, walking six and allowing four hits.

St. Vincent 7, Crystal City 4

St. Vincent used a big third inning to pick up its first win, at home.

The Indians (1-1) trailed 4-1 going into the bottom half of the third, where they scored five runs to take a 5-4 lead.

Dusty Cissell pitched five innings for the win. Alex Armbruster pitched the final two innings for the save. Armbruster also had two hits for St. Vincent, as did Bret Richardet, Luke Guyot and Brian Buchheit.

Poplar Bluff won a tight race for the title in the 15-team tournament held at Bent Creek Golf Course in Jackson.

The Mules finished with a 333 score to slip past second-place Jackson (334) and third-place Central (335). Ste. Genevieve (340) and Sikeston (345) rounded out the top five.

Jackson's Matt Litzelfelner was the individual medalist as he shot a 3-over 75 to edge Poplar Bluff's Ryan Hutson (76). Central's Todd Obergoenner and Jackson's Eric Fraley tied for third at 79.

SOFTBALL

Delta 15, Woodland 5

Delta (3-0) survived a barrage of Woodland hits to win at home in five innings.

Rebecca Cook relieved starter Ashley Martin to pick up the win for the Bobcats. Martin made up for her short pitching performance with a 4-for-5 day at the plate. Jenny Dannenmueller added three hits for Delta and Ashley Elliot and Tiffany Johnson had two hits apiece.

For Woodland, Kyla Hahn and Jenna Greer had three hits apiece, and Ashley Hill, Lotte Cook, Julie Huffman and Stacie Greer all added two hits.

Leopold 18, Scott County Central 0

Leopold opened its season with a three-inning rout of visiting Scott County Central.

Mary Beth Bohnsack pitched a no-hitter and Holly Jansen went 3-for-3 with a home run and four RBIs. Laurie Vandermierden and Tasha Thele added two hits apiece for Leopold.

GIRLS SWIMMING

Central wins triangular

Central (4-2) got two wins from Katie Maginel and Cassie Kipper and won a tri-meet at McCluer North. The Tigers scored 124 points to beat St. Charles West (104) and McCluer North (96).

Kipper won the 200 free (2:12.11) and 100 back (1:11.39) and Maginel won the 100 butterfly (1:09.25) and 500 free (6:16.27).

Hannah Lewis was the only other Tiger individual winner in the 100 free (1:03.84). Central also won the 400 free relay, with Lauren Sulser, Maginel, Lewis and Kipper part of the squad.

GIRLS SOCCER

Notre Dame 0, Perryville 0

Notre Dame had several close calls but could not put it in the net in a scoreless tie with Perryville.

Katie Palmer picked up the shutout for the Bulldogs as both teams are now 3-1-1. Each team saw several shots go off the post. Perryville junior Kate Lowry made 13 saves for the Pirates.

"Both teams had some pretty good chances to score," Notre Dame coach Jeff Worley said.--From staff reports
