CHARLESTON — The Malden High School volleyball team won the Charleston Bluejay Invitational tournament on Saturday evening.

The Green Wave topped Oran, 25-18, 25-23, for the title.

Malden went 5-1 in pool play, allowing only 93 points along the way.

The Green Wave opened pool play in the morning with a 25-16, 25-18 victory over Hayti.

They followed by tying East Prairie, winning the opening set 25-13 but dropping the second 25-23.

Malden finished pool play with a 25-21, 25-20 conquest of Egyptian (Ill.).

With their success in the tournament, Malden improved to 11-9-3.

Piggott, Ark. 3, Campbell 0

PIGGOTT, Ark. — Piggott swept Campbell during an interstate match on Saturday morning by scores of 25-16, 25-10, 25-21.

The Camels record dropped to 7-12-2 on the season while Piggott improved to 6-9.

Campbell and Malden squared off in a northern Dunklin County match Monday, too late for this press run of the Delta Dunklin Democrat.

Cross Country

CAPE GIRARDEAU — Dylan Yates raced in with a 90th place finish in the varsity boys race on Saturday at the Cape Notre Dame Regional meet.

Yates recorded a time of 21:11.00.

Kennett’s Kale Anderson was 114th, Gabriel Checkett 143rd, Blaine Roberts 144th and Cash Franklin 153rd in a highly competitive field.

Jackson was the team champion, fueled by Bryce Gentry’s win in a time of 16:17.90. St. Charles West earned the girls title, with freshman Brianna Krueger the gold medalist (20:11.80).

Campbell’s Drew Fowler placed third and took the bronze medal in the JV boys race (19:25.60), and the Camels were third overall in the team standings with 94 points.

Other boys finishers were: Clay Huber (17th), Caiden Mayberry (24th), Zander Mayberry (26th), James Ollinger (64th), Phillip Hanners (75th), Zander Hanners (84th), Jackson Foster (94th), Adon Lawless (110th) and Wyatt Janson (112th).

Huber and Caiden Mayberry were rewarded with medals, too, since the top-25 runners in every division were given them.

Taylor Coleman of Campbell earned a medal in the girls JV race, taking 19th (27:39.1).

Fall Baseball

BERNIE — The Bernie, Bloomfield, Campbell and Senath-Hornersville baseball teams advanced to Monday’s semifinals of the Bernie Fall Classic.

Bernie played Bloomfield and Senath-Hornersville squared off with Campbell, with both games starting at 4 p.m. Monday.

The championship and third-place games are set for today 4 p.m.
