The St. Vincent volleyball team fell just shy of a state title a few weeks ago, finishing in second place in Class 2.

Now four of the starters on that runner-up team will change into their blue and gold basketball uniforms and try to bring home a possible first-place finish on the court.

"They are a competitive group, and they like to get out and get after it," said Indians coach Terry Wengert, who enters her 16th year. "We plan on continuing the winning ways that make it all possible, and as long as everything works out well, they're good athletes and they're very competitive and they're hard workers."

Lacey Siegmund, a setter and outside hitter on the volleyball team, will play center/forward as she did last year.

"For her size she [Siegmund, 5 foot 8] does a very good job," Wengert said. "She keeps everyone going and she's tough on defense and likes to rally everyone. She'll get in there and rebound."

The other volleyball players -- Brooke Brown, Kelsey Cissell and Courtney Besand -- all return after helping the Indians win their first district title since 1989 last year.

Brown will play forward and be expected to rebound and come up big in the clutch when needed, Wengert said. Both Cissell and Besand are strong and quick defenders.

Senior guard Elizabeth Rozier will also return and be expected to shoot the ball and use her speed to defend as the Indians will employ a press defense at times, along with a zone.

"We just try to work on our quickness and getting out and attacking," Wengert said. "We're very good defensively when it counts."
