For the second straight year, former Cape Girardeau Central High standout swimmer Erin Vogt turned in an impressive performance during the NCAA Women's Championships.
A sophomore at the University of Arizona, Vogt earned a pair of All-America honors and finished in the top 16 of two other events as she helped lead the Lady Wildcats to a second-place finish during the meet held over the weekend in Indianapolis.
Arizona, matching its best finish ever, scored 472 points. Georgia won the championship with 490.5 points while Stanford was a distant third with 397 points.
Vogt swam a leg on Arizona's 400-meter medley relay team that finished second in a time of 3:58.47 that actually bettered the previous American record of 3:58.94. Georgia won the event with a world-record time of 3:57.46.
Vogt also earned All-America honors by placing sixth in the 200-meter butterfly in 2:11.79. The winning time was 2:06.04.
In addition, Vogt was 12th in the 400-meter individual medley (4:45.61) and 15th in the 200-meter individual medley (2:14.80).
Last year, as a freshman, Vogt was sixth in the 400 medley relay, sixth in the 400 individual medley and 10th in the 200 butterfly as she helped lead Arizona to a fourth-place team finish.
As a senior in high school, Vogt was regarded as one of the nation's top swimmers for her age group. She attended Marquette in St. Louis for her senior season so she could compete for the Rockwood Swim Club.
Vogt won two state titles and was named the most valuable swimmer at the state meet during her freshman season at Cape Central. She also attended Cape Central as a freshman and sophomore but did not compete for the Lady Tigers, instead swimming on the club level.
Another former Cape Central standout, Jon Younghouse, will look to close out his impressive college career later this week when the NCAA Men's Championships are held in Minneapolis.
Younghouse, a senior at Texas, is a four-time All-America. He placed sixth in both the 500 freestyle and 1,650 freestyle during last year's NCAA Championship. As a sophomore, Younghouse, was fourth in the 500 freestyle and eighth in the 1,650 freestyle.
Younghouse is also a two-time member of the United States National `B' Team, which is comprised of U.S. swimmers who rank in the top 9-16 in their events in the FINA World Rankings.
