NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- A.J. Ogilvy was 11 of 12 at the free-throw line and finished with 25 points, and Vanderbilt held off Missouri 89-83 Wednesday night in the Commodores' first home game since their season opener.
The Commodores (5-1) hadn't played in six days since finishing fifth at the Maui Invitational, where an opening loss to Cincinnati ended their stint at No. 24 at one week. They dominated inside, and Ogilvy, at 6-foot-11 the tallest player on the floor by 2 inches, was a big reason why.
Jeffery Taylor scored 18 points and had 11 rebounds, Jermaine Beal 15 and Andre Walker grabbed 12 rebounds as Vanderbilt outrebounded Missouri 47-26. John Jenkins also had 11 points.
Missouri (4-2) refused to quit, trailing by 14 with 5:25 to go, and used a 13-1 spurt to erase that lead before coming up short after a furious final minute.
Kim English led Missouri with 20 points, Zaire Taylor had 17, Mike Dixon scored 11 and J.T. Tiller added 10.
Vanderbilt led 78-64 with 5:26 left after Ogilvy scored on a putback. Missouri wiped that out with a 13-1 run, but couldn't get closer than one, the last on Zaire Taylor's 3 at 84-83 with 1:15 to go.
The Commodores sealed the victory by hitting 5 of 6 free throws in the final 54.4 seconds. English missed a layup, Tiller was called for a charge on a drive to the basket and finally Zaire Taylor missed a layup.
Vandy also outscored the Tigers 42-30 in the paint and at the line (26 of 31 compared to 16 of 24). Missouri came up with 14 steals, but only five in the second half.
The teams swapped the lead four times with four ties in the first half. Ogilvy hit two free throws with 3:40 to go that started a 9-0 spurt and kept Vandy ahead to stay. Justin Safford's two free throws pulled Missouri within 39-33 at halftime.
Ogilvy scored the first four points of the second half, and Steve Tchiengang added a layup. Beal and Jeffery Taylor later hit back-to-back 3s to push the lead to double digits, and the Commodores eventually led by as many as 14 points.
Missouri got off to a tough start as Jeffery Taylor blocked the Tigers' first two shots -- both by English. Later, Walker swatted another of English's jumpers into the crowd.
Maybe it was the travel back from Hawaii or the layoff, but early on, the Commodores had trouble hitting the basket even on easy layups and short jumpers.
English's jumper at 8:07 gave Missouri its first lead of the game at 24-23, and the teams went back and forth until Ogilvy's free throws.
