The 2023-24 season has been full of surprises for the Cape Central Tigers.
Perhaps the biggest surprise of this season for the Tigers has been the exceptional play of senior guard Tyson Williams.
Because of the dire injury situation the Tigers faced to open the year, the door was open for Williams to make an impact.
“I’ve worked hard these last three years,” Williams said. “Coach (Drew) Church and I figured it was my time. I just wanted to use all the work I’ve put in these past years and help my team the most I can.”
In his first three seasons, Williams had shown flashes of the player he could be, but with perhaps more freedom than ever at the guard position, Williams has shined.
“I knew that I would have a bigger role with losing some of our important seniors,” Williams said. “I just took that in stride and really put my head down and worked hard.”
The success coming this year is even sweeter for Williams because it’s his finally year with Cape Central.
“It means a lot,” Williams said. “I’m going out with a bang and letting everyone know that I can play and be helpful somewhere else too.”
As far as the reason for his success? Williams gave all the credit to his teammates.
“It’s just the team,” Williams said. “The past couple years we’ve had a lot of success and I credit our coaches and our system.”
While his focus remains on the task at hand with the Tigers, Williams has also been thinking ahead to his future in basketball.
“I’m planning to go play JUCO somewhere,” Williams said. “Then later I want to transfer to a four-year university.”
Cape Central (16-8) rounds out its regular season at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 20, when the Tigers host Park Hills Central.
Following that contest, preparations will begin for the Class 5 District 1 Tournament.
“We want to win,” Williams said. “We’ve had some bumps in the road this season and we’re looking to channel that into a positive outcome.”
Class 5 District 1 play is scheduled to begin on Feb. 29.
