SIKESTON — Sikeston might have a multi-sport star in the making with freshman Kennedi Sims. Fresh off her standout basketball season, Sims wasted no time showcasing her scoring touch on the soccer field, netting two goals to lead Sikeston to a 2-0 season-opening victory over Anna-Jonesboro on Monday, March 18 at the Sports Complex.
Just five minutes into the match, Sims found the back of the net. Cate Schrumpf's excellently placed pass set her up for a decisive finish, giving the Lady Bulldogs (1-0) the early edge.
Sims showcased her sharp instincts, pouncing on an Anna-Jonesboro miscue with about 10 minutes left in the first half.
Her composure in the face of the keeper resulted in her second goal of the night.
"I thought we set the tone early by establishing possession, building attacks from the back and keeping the ball locked into their end,” said Sikeston coach “Our team defense remained gritty all night to earn the shutout and Hailey Presley finished with seven saves.”
Sikeston hosts Carterville (0-0) on Wednesday, March 20 and travel to Kelly (0-1) on Thursday, March 21.
