Southeast Missouri State University's track and field program had some standout performances during its first outdoor meet of the season over the weekend at the Alabama Relays in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

Jay Heddell, Heather Jenkins and Jaret Willi were particularly impressive.

Heddell, a sophomore, won with a throw of 58 feet 8 inches that is second all-time on Southeast's outdoor list and meets the NCAA provisional qualifying standard.

Jenkins, a freshman from Central High School, won the discus at 156-9, second on the school's all-time list.

Willi also finished first as he went a career-best 16-11 in the pole vault.

Other notable performers for Southeast were Adam Shupe (second, 800 meters); Amy Arteme (third, 10,000); Laura VanHoevelaak (fifth, 400 hurdles); Heddell (sixth, discus); and Shelton Scott (sixth, triple jump).

Gymnasts make regionals

Southeast's Ashley Godwin and Michelle Walker have qualified for the South Central Regional Gymnastics Championships April 6 in Tempe, Ariz.

Godwin, a sophomore, qualified as an all-arounder. She had a regional qualifying score of 38.815 and was the third qualifier of five that each regional allows.

Walker, a senior, qualified in the floor exercise. She had the highest regional qualifying score (9.830) of any athlete not competing as part of a team or in the all-around.

Southeast's Amy Cole will be an alternate for the all-around should any of the competitors not make the meet.

Golf meet shortened

JACKSON, Mo. -- The Dr. Morton B. Harris Memorial Tournament was shortened to 27 holes because of rain.

The five teams played 18 holes Sunday and nine Monday at Kimbeland Country Club.

There was medal play and four-ball competition. Missouri-Kansas City won both.

In medal play, UMKC shot 401, followed by Southeast (409), St. Louis (414), Eastern Illinois (414) and Bradley (416).

Individually, Southeast's Woody Hill placed third (108).

In the four-ball, UMKC took the top two spots, with Vandebrook and Charlie Mahan placing first (96). Southeast's Bryan Johnson and Matt Hillis were third (101).

Baseball up in air

No decision was made regarding the status of today's scheduled 4 p.m. baseball game between Southeast and St. Louis at Capaha Field.

Regardless, Kohlfeld Distributing Day was rescheduled for April 13 when the Indians face Tennessee-Martin.

Today's softball doubleheader at Southwest Missouri State has been rained out.
