Day two of the 2004 Major League Baseball Draft brought another opportunity for an area athlete.

Central graduate John Thies, who recently finished his freshman season at Meramec Community College in Kirkwood, Mo., was drafted Tuesday by the Minnesota Twins in the 36th round.

Meramec finished 27-28-1.

Thies was Central's top pitcher in 2003, compiling a 7-3 record with a 2.15 ERA. In 71 2/3 innings. Thies struck out 92 and posted nearly a four-to-one strikeout-to-walk ratio.

Noteworthy

The Ohio Valley Conference had three players taken Tuesday. Eastern Illinois led the list with two players taken, both in the 31st round. Christopher Uhle and Kyle Haines of EIU went to Houston and San Francisco, respectively. Eastern Kentucky's Neil Sellers went to Houston in the 32nd round.
