The Cape Senior Babe Ruth baseball team found themselves shorthanded Thursday night as they squared off against Charleston at Capaha Park, but that's something to which they have grown accustomed.
"We've got four kids gone on vacation now," Cape coach Alan Wengert said. "It's been that way all season, but that's no excuse."
Cape (3-6) fell to Charleston 7-0 in the seven-inning contest, the first game of a scheduled doubleheader. Charleston also won the second game 10-7.
Taking the loss in the opener for Cape was starting pitcher Anthony Wulfers, who posted a 5-2 record while pitching for Notre Dame this spring. Wulfers allowed seven hits through six innings and recorded nine strikeouts before being relieved with no outs in the seventh.
"Anthony pitched a good game," Wengert said. "We just couldn't get any offense going, and it's been like that all season. Our pitching's been solid, we've just been having trouble generating offense."
Another problem for Cape in Thursday's game was defense. Cape committed five errors, including three in a three-run third inning for Charleston.
Recording the win for Charleston (5-10) was starting pitcher Dallas Tew, a product of Kelly High School. Tew struck out seven and allowed five hits in a complete-game shutout.
In the second game, Adam Thomas took the loss. Cape had nine hits with Jacob Wengert, Tyler Bruce and Nathan Kolda each having two.
