The Jackson Senior Babe Ruth baseball team opened its season Friday by sweeping a doubleheader at Dexter 16-5 and 12-0.

Alex Beussink was the winning pitcher in the opener. He also had two hits, as did Jesse Schott, Clay Roth and David Gray.

Jesse Long notched the second-game victory. Trent Steffens had three hits, followed by Beussink, Schott and Tyler Koenig with two each.

Jackson, the defending Missouri Senior Babe Ruth state champion, returns to action Monday against New Madrid in a 6 p.m. doubleheader.

Cobras win two at Bi-State tournament

The Southeast Missouri Cobras 16-under baseball team won two games in pool play Saturday at the Missouri/Illinois 18-under Bi-State tournament at Lake St. Louis.

The Cobras (4-0) enter bracket play today as the top seed.

Saturday's opener saw the Cobras beat the Illinois Braves 4-3. James Dickerson was the winning pitcher and Trey Tigart recorded the final two outs for a save.

Kyle Harris had two hits, Tyler Anderson had an RBI double and Cambron Womack's squeeze bunt produced the game-winning RBI.

The Cobras then defeated the Southern Illinois Bullets 4-1. Travis Phillips notched the victory and Tigart worked the final two innings for another save.

Dickerson had two RBIs and Denton Daugherty delivered an RBI double.
