Cape Senior Legion third in tourney

The Ford & Sons Cape Girardeau Senior American Legion Post 63 baseball team finished third Sunday at the Fighting Squirrel Classic in Charleston, Mo.

Cape (10-6) beat Kennett Senior Babe Ruth 12-5 to finish 3-1 in the tournament. The lone loss was to Elsberry 9-2 in Saturday's semifinals.

Jesse Schott and Trey Gardner both had two of Cape's 10 hits Sunday. Schott belted his sixth home run of the season and drove in three runs.

Aaron Wendel pitched all seven innings. He allowed seven hits, struck out four and walked two.

Poplar Bluff Senior Babe Ruth won the title in the 16-team tournament. It remained undefeated by beating Elsberry 3-1.

Cape Junior Legion finishes fifth

The Plaza Tire Cape Girardeau Junior American Legion Post 63 baseball team finished 1-3 to grab fifth place at the Tri-County Summer Slam tournament in Calvert City, Ky.

Post 63 opened the tournament with a 16-4 loss in five innings to the West Kentucky Thunderbirds on Friday.

Adam Pope took the loss on the mound despite going 2 for 2 with an RBI at the plate.

Michael Essner also went 2 for 2 in the loss.

Post 63 then lost to the Owensboro Bombers 12-5 on Saturday.

Trevor Propst took the loss after allowing 12 runs, six earned, over five innings.

Gabe Felter went 2 for 3 with two RBIs, while Propst went 2 for 2 with an RBI.

Post 63 also dropped a 6-5 decision to Chillicothe, Ohio, on Saturday.

Chase Eubank took the loss after giving up six runs, one earned, over 6 2/3 innings.

Logan Callahan and Pope both drove in a run for Post 63.

Post 63 defeated Marshall County 11-10 in five innings in Sunday's fifth-place game. The game was stopped because of a time limit.

Aaron Grainger earned the win.

Propst went 2 for 3 with an RBI and two runs scored, while Nick Bradshaw went 2 for 3 with three RBIs.

Jackson Jr. Legion sweeps Scott County

The Jackson Junior American Legion baseball team swept a doubleheader with the Scott County Junior American Legion team Sunday.

Jackson posted a 10-0 win in five innings then won the second game 12-4.

Collin Herzog earned the win in the opener, while Zach Carlyle took the loss.

Scott County (2-6) led 4-1 going into the fifth inning in the second game, but Jackson scored 11 unaswered runs.

Scott County's Layne Spies went 2 for 3 with an RBI in the second game.

Jackson Sr. Babe Ruth falls in tourney

The Jackson Senior Babe Ruth baseball team lost to Park Hills Senior American Legion 5-4 in the Fighting Squirrel Classic on Saturday.

Heath Pobst doubled twice in the loss.

Jackson fell to 3-7.
