Post 63 moves to 26-7 after tournament

The Cape Girardeau Ford & Sons Post 63 Senior American Legion baseball team finished play Saturday in the Paducah (Ky.) tournament with a 4-1 record.

Cape, 26-7 on the season, finished pool play 4-0 after a 10-2, five-inning win over Mayfield, Ky.

Post 63 came back later in the day and lost to Columbia, Tenn., 12-4 in the first round of the eight-team bracket play. There were 20 teams in the tournament.

Josh Compas powered Cape past Mayfield with two home runs and four RBIs. His three-run homer highlighted a nine-run second inning that also featured a homer by Dustin Crowden.

Crowden and Skylar Cobb matched Compas with two hits. Cape had nine hits.

Jeremy Essner pitched all five innings for the win. He allowed four hits, struck out two and walked four.

Crowden again had two of Cape's nine hits against Columbia. Logan Morris pitched 6 1/3 innings and took the loss.

Cape assured it would move out of its pool with an 8-5 victory against Shelbyville, Ky., on Friday.

Tyler Glidewell belted a grand slam in a six-run third inning and took the mound in the seventh for a one-out save.

Cobb pitched the first 5 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits. He struck out nine and walked two. Ronnie Scott worked 1 1/3 innings before yielding to Glidewell.

Cobb and Josh Hiett both had three hits. Jimmy Obermark added two hits for Cape, which had 10 hits.

The Jackson Senior Babe Ruth baseball team ran its winning streak to 12 games Friday night with a sweep of visiting Dexter.

Jackson (21-1) won the opener 5-2 behind the complete-game pitching of B.I. Howard, then won the nightcap 8-4.

Howard allowed five hits and two earned runs. Alex Beussink and Jon Winkler both had two hits as Jackson had eight overall.

In the second game, starting pitcher Jesse Long threw four innings for the win. Sam Breite followed with two innings of work and Beussink pitched the seventh for the save.

Austin Mueller had two of Jackson's six hits.

Cape Girardeau Jr. Legion splits

The Cape Girardeau Junior American Legion baseball team split a doubleheader with visiting House Springs on Saturday, winning 10-9 and losing 7-4.

Cape (14-10) posted a thrilling first-game victory, scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Justin Modglin tied things at 9-9 with a two-run double, then Justin Landewee's walk-off single scored Luke Hinkebein.

Landewee had two hits and scored three times. Steven Brennan and Austin Atchley added two hits apiece.

Ryan Moses pitched the final five innings for the win. He allowed five hits and one earned runs while striking out four and walking none.

Brennan had two hits and two RBIs in the second game. Atchley added two hits. Landewee extended his streak of reaching base safely in every game this season.

Landewee pitched all seven innings and took the loss. He allowed nine hits and five earned runs, with six strikeouts and three walks.
