TUCSON, Ariz. -- Karen Stupples, an admirer of English golf icon and countrywoman Laura Davies, will be playing in the same threesome with her for the first time.
Stupples put together a 4-under 66 Friday to lead the Welch's/Fry's Championship by one shot over Davies and Jung Yeon Lee. Stupples, who has never finished higher than third on the LPGA Tour, followed up her career-best 63 Thursday with a four-birdie performance in the second round to reach 11 under.
"I'm enjoying my golf right now," said Stupples, the touring professional for Dalhousie Golf Club. "I'm enjoying every shot and the challenge that every shot brings, and I think that's really making a difference in my game."
Davies had her second straight 65, while Lee struggled to a 70.
Jacobsen shares lead in his first Champions event
Peter Jacobsen got off to a fast start in his Champions Tour debut, shooting a 5-under 67 on Friday for a share of the first-round lead in the SBC Classic.
Jacobsen, who turned 50 last week, was even with Craig Stadler, Gil Morgan, Don Pooley and Mike McCulloch.
Pettersson ahead by three strokes at Honda Classic Carl Pettersson shot 4-under 68 at theHonda Classic for a three-shot lead, the largest 36-hole margin on the PGA Tour this year.
