SYLVANIA, Ohio -- Meg Mallon and Angela Jerman capitalized on early, windless conditions Friday, and moved into a tie for the lead after two rounds of the Jamie Farr Owens Corning Classic.
Mallon, the U.S. Women's Open champion, offset a double bogey at the par-3 6th with an eagle at the par-5 17th and moved to 7-under 135 with a 2-under 69.
Jerman, a second-year pro who had never led an LPGA Tour event, had five birdies and two bogeys in a 3-under 68.
Brandie Burton was alone in third, one shot back, after a 69. Karrie Webb had a 68 and was tied for fourth with first-round leader Karen Stupples.
Stupples, coming off a victory at the Women's British Open, followed an opening 65 with a 1-over 72.
Defending champion Se Ri Pak battled windy conditions in the afternoon and shot a 72 that left her three shots back in sixth place.
Pak is trying to become only the second player to win the same LPGA event five times, matching Mickey Wright who won the Sea Island Open in 1957-58, 1960-61 and 1963.
PGA Tour
Chris DiMarco had four birdies to complete his first round, then added nine more in the second for 31 points and a six-point lead Friday at The International in Castle Rock, Colo.
Rain and lightning ended Thursday's first round, forcing half the field to return Friday for up to 33 holes at hilly Castle Pines Golf Club. Two more rounds of storms hit Friday, setting up another marathon day in the altitude for 72 players.
The second round will be completed this morning and the top 70 plus ties will continue on to the third round.
First-round leader Rod Pampling was second with 25 points through 11 holes of the second round. Bob Tway was another point back, and Olin Browne, with 17 points, made the biggest move of the day, tying the tournament record with 10 birdies in an 18-point second round.
Champions Tour
Craig Stadler and Tom Purtzer carded 8-under 64s and shared the first-round lead at the 3M Championship in Blaine, Minn.
Stadler completed his first round with a run of four straight birdies, including a 61-foot putt at No. 16, and shot a 30 on the back nine.
Purtzer made the turn at 3 under, then reeled off five straight birdies to move into a tie for the lead. He closed out the round with four pars.
Sammy Rachels birdied five of the first seven holes and finished tied with Tom Kite at 65. Defending champion Wayne Levi birdied the last three holes was alone in fourth place at 6 under. Eighteen players were within four shots of the lead at the TPC of the Twin Cities.
