FREDERICKTOWN -- St. Vincent's bid for a sweep of the boys and girls titles in Class 1A, District 3 came up as a double disappointment Friday night as both the Indians and Squaws came up short against top-seeded teams.

South Iron ended the St. Vincent boys' season with a 66-57 victory. Viburnum dealt the second-seeded St. Vincent girls a 57-28 setback.

South Iron's Jared Lane proved too much for the Indians, scoring a game-high 31 points. John Alcorn added 13 points.

Todd Meyer tallied 24 points to lead St. Vincent, which ended the season with a 19-8 mark. Teammate Gabe Hotop added 10 points.

St. Vincent, the third seed, jumped out to a 9-1 lead and led 14-10 after one quarter. But Lane began to heat up with nine points in the second quarter as South Iron (20-4) closed the period with a 13-3 run for a 30-26 halftime advantage. South Iron took a 44-42 lead into the fourth quarter. The Indians nudged ahead 47-46 with about six minutes remaining, but Lane again exerted himself with 10 fourth-quarter points. South Iron outscored St. Vincent 22-15 in the period, connecting on 12 of 15 free throws.

On the girls side, Jessica Coleman broke loose for 25 points, including 10 in a decisive second quarter.

Second-seeded St. Vincent carried a 9-8 lead out of the first quarter, but was outscored 18-4 in the second period. Viburnum took a 26-13 lead into the second half, where it outscored St. Vincent 17-7 in the third quarter for a commanding 43-20 lead.

Donna Coleman hit for three 3-pointers and finished with 12 points for Viburnum.

Dannielle Sutterer paced St. Vincent, which finished its season with a 17-9 record, with eight points.
