St. Vincent stuns ND in 3 sets

PERRYVILLE, Mo. -- St. Vincent High pulled off perhaps the area's biggest volleyball upset this season Wednesday night, knocking off Notre Dame 15-7, 9-15, 15-11.

The Squaws improved to 3-7-1, while the Lady Bulldogs -- who took second place in the 35-team SEMO Specialty & Sports Tournament earlier this month -- dropped to 12-3-1.

"We've had a lot of close ones this year that we've lost, so it was good to win a close one," St. Vincent coach Louise Wibbenmeyer said. "I think this is a turning point.

"We kind of snuck up on them and it was nice on our home court."

St. Vincent got seven kills and 12 digs from Beth Hennemann. Megan Moll provided five kills and seven digs, while Allison Prost had four kills and Dani Emmendorfer added 11 digs.

Notre Dames' coach Helen Payne said, "The only good thing to come out of this is my girls never gave up. But I told them not to make any plans for tomorrow evening. We'll be practicing very hard."

Notre Dame's junior varsity won 15-6, 15-10.

ORAN 15-15

CHAFFEE 7-1

ORAN, Mo. -- Maria Eftink scored 12 service points, including seven aces, to lead Oran (9-7-1) over Chaffee.

Eftink also paced the Oran attack with three kills, while Amber Seyer had two kills and two blocks. Candice Duncan chipped in with six points and nine assists.

Oran's JV squad won 15-2, 15-4.

LEOPOLD 15-15-15

BELL CITY 17-11-3

BELL CITY, Mo. -- Leopold (9-2-1) got off to a slow start against a young, aggressive Bell City (9-4-1) team before turning it up to capture the last two sets for the win.

"You've got to give Leopold credit," said Bell City coach Carl Ritter. "Our girls played hard, but they (Leopold) can get you four or five different ways. They kind of wore us down."

Leopold's Holly Jansen had a monster net game with 24 kills. Courtney Wesbecher and Kyla Horrell had seven and six kills, respectively. Wendy Vandeven was credited with 31 assists.

For the Lady Cubs, Katie Spears had a big game with 14 kills, two blocks and 16 digs. Freshman Katie Niemczyk contributed 11 kills and nine digs, while setter Whitney Abner had 24 assists and 12 service points.

SOFTBALL

KELLY 5, DONGOLA, ILL. 4

BENTON, Mo. -- Bridgett Riley's walk-off triple in the bottom of the seventh inning propelled Kelly (11-2) to a come-from-behind victory over Dongola.

Down 4-2 in their last at bat, the Lady Hawks loaded the bases with no outs, but Dongola got two outs with no damage done when Riley strolled to the plate.

With a two-strike count, Riley ripped the next pitch to right field to unload the bases and send the winning runs home.

Dana Essner picked up the win as she gave up seven hits and no earned runs. Essner struck out eight and walked one while going the distance.

Riley, the only player with multiple hits, led the Kelly offense with two hits.

CAPE CENTRAL 2, HILLSBORO 0

HILLSBORO, Mo. -- Holly Schnurbusch pitched a one-hitter to lead Central to a victory.

Schnurbusch struck out four and walked two.

"I thought she mixed up speeds and did a great job of getting ahead in the count," Central coach Amy Blattel said.

Megan Kistner went 3-for-4 for the Lady Tigers (10-12) who had just five hits total.

Both of Central's runs were scored on a throwing error in the sixth.
