CARUTHERSVILLE, Mo. -- St. Vincent used a stout defense to remain undefeated with a 24-0 win over Caruthersville Saturday in high school football action.

The Indians (6-0), second-ranked in Class 1A, got a 1-yard touchdown run from Mark Gotto with 8 minutes left in the first quarter. Derek Kutz added the extra point.

That score, 7-0, stood throughout the first half and the third quarter.

Then with 11:19 left in the fourth quarter, signal caller Jonathan Paulus scored on a 1-yard sneak to extend the lead to 14-0 after a Kutz extra point.

All-State kicker Kutz added a 22-yard field goal to open the lead to 17-0.

St. Vincent rounded out the scoring for the day on a 40-yard interception return by Adam Bockman for a touchdown and another Kutz extra point kick.

CROSS COUNTRY

Potosi Invitational

POTOSI, Mo. -- Cape Central swept all three divisions -- varsity boys, varsity girls and JV boys -- in the 17-team Potosi Invitational meet.

Cape Central's boys captured their division with 57 points, followed by Perryville (77) and Farmington (104).

Mark Stone ran the 3.03-mile course in 16:31 for a second-place finish. Justin Hawkins (16:48) and Gabe Austin (16:50) finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Perryville placed three runners in the top 10 as Jacob Schneider (16:57) was sixth, Nathan Moore (17:17) eighth and Kent Hadler (17:19) ninth.

The Lady Tigers won with 48 points over Hillsboro (83) and Festus (122).

Cape Central's Kim Pancoast was the meet champion with a time of 19:49.

Perryville's Katrina Bockhorn took third at 20:46. Cape Central's Rachel Sprigg (21:07) and Whitney Pingel (21:08) finished eighth and ninth, respectively.

Carbondale Invitational

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Kelly's cross country team had a banner day as six of the seven varsity boy runners recorded career personal records.

Adam Doughhetee set a school record in a 5K race with a time of 16:40, which was good for fourth place and a medal.

Kelly's Andrew Mothershead took 25th in 18:13 which was the fastest time ever recorded by a Kelly freshman in a 5K race. Kelly's boys ended up with a third-place finish in the 12-team race, while the girls finished fifth.

On the girls side, Shannon Lawson medaled, taking 20th in 18:00.

"We had a great day," said Kelly coach Bill Davis. "We're looking forward to district and I told them today we needed to start getting things together and we really ran well. The weather was perfect and I think we were fresh going in."

Washington University High Invitational

ST. LOUIS -- Susan Judd was Notre Dame's only medalist, taking 18th place in 19:44.

Judd and Adam Eftink (99th in 18:29) both completed this 5,000-meter race about a minute faster than they did last year.

Notre Dame's boys team finished 17th out of 19 teams with 452 teams and the girls took 21st out of 25 teams with 567 points.

Fort Zumwalt South won the boys race with 65 points and Kansas City Notre Dame-DeSion took first in the girls race with 48 points.

Marshall County (Ky.) Invitational

BENTON, Ky. -- Jackson's Josh Minson earned a medal by taking 19th place in 17:26 in a huge meet.

In all, there were 39 schools and 700 runners competing.

Krista Mouser led Jackson's female runners by taking 23rd in 20:47.

"We ran a lot of PRs today," Jackson coach Andrea Talley said. "I was pleased with the way we ran for it being such a cold day."
