Jon Buehler made a steal and layup in the final minute and Waylon Richardet hit the game-winning free throw with 7 seconds remaining to lead St. Vincent in a 50-49 come-from-behind victory against Saxony Lutheran on Tuesday night.

The Indians took control of Pool A in the second annual Saxony Lutheran Christmas Tournament, a six-team event.

Saxony plays Zalma at 7:30 tonight, and St. Vincent plays Zalma on Thursday.

COSL of Illinois beat Valle 54-35 in Pool B, which also includes Ste. Genevieve.

Richardet was fouled after St. Vincent ran about 20 seconds off the clock to set up a last shot. He made one of two free throws, which stood up for the win.

Buehler had made a steal with about 49 seconds to play to tie the score for St. Vincent, which trailed 38-33 heading into the final period.

"This was probably our best effort of the year," St. Vincent coach Bruce Valleroy said. "We still have work to do but our hustle and effort was better."

Richardet led the Indians (3-4) with 16 points and 22 rebounds -- nine on the offensive end. Greg Finger added 12 points.

Saxony Lutheran (6-2) was led by Alex Jauch with 15 points. Lauren Lueders scored 12 points -- all on 3-pointers. She hit three in the first half. Tim Lorenz added nine points for the Crusaders.

"We did a better job on Lueders in the second half," Valleroy said, "and they started going inside to Lorenz more, and we were dumping the ball into Waylon."

St. Vincent and Saxony Lutheran had not met previously in a varsity game. Valleroy said his seniors lost twice to Saxony when the Lutheran school's program started out as a junior varsity team.

"I guess we owed them one," he said.
