SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- St. Vincent High School has its second state golf championship as the Indians held on to win the Class 1A title Tuesday.
The Indians held a commanding nine-stroke lead after Monday's opening round as they fired a 305 at Bill and Payne Stewart Golf Club. They slipped a little bit to 315 Tuesday, but their 620 total was still good enough to hold off runner-up Gallatin (624). Springfield Greenwood was third (642).
St. Vincent, which was second in the state last year after capturing the title in 1998, had two players earn all-state honors. Craig Schumer tied for sixth at 152 (74-78) while Jonathan Paulus tied for ninth at 153 (75-78). The top 15 in the meet medaled.
Schumer and Paulus both competed on St. Vincent's state title team as freshmen. Paulus medaled for the third year in a row while Schumer medaled for the second time, including once as a freshman.
Two Indians tied for 17th at 158, Andrew Prost (78-80) and Mark Gotto (78-80). Rounding out the St. Vincent lineup was Wes Richardet, who had a 160 (81-79).
