St. Charles West, which won all three of its games by the identical score of 2-0, finished first in the eight-team I-55 girls soccer tournament that concluded Saturday at Notre Dame High School.
The Lady Warriors were the only squad to finish the eight-team tourney with a perfect record.
Cape Girardeau Central, St. Louis Notre Dame and Ft. Zumwalt South all went 2-1. And, even though the Lady Tigers beat both of those other 2-1 squads, SL Notre Dame finished second and Ft. Zumwalt South third under the tournament points system that, in addition to awarding six points for each win, gave out one point per goal (up to three) and one point per shutout.
In Saturday's action, Cape Central defeated Ft. Zumwalt South 3-1 and lost to St. Charles West 2-0; Cape Notre Dame lost to St. Charles West 2-0 and Ft. Zumwalt South 2-0; Jackson tied Ft. Zumwalt North 1-1 and lost to SL Notre Dame 4-0; and Poplar Bluff beat Ft. Zumwalt North 2-0 and lost to SL Notre Dame 3-0.
For Cape Central during its win over Ft. Zumwalt South, Amber Voerg, Amanda Hiler and Lori Bittle scored goals while Voerg, Hiler and Katie Hawkins had assists.
Lady Tigers' coach Tom Doyle did not seem disappointed that his team failed to finish in the tourney's top three despite beating the second-place and third-place squads.
"That's just the way it goes. It doesn't bother me at all," Doyle said. "The main thing is that we got three good games in."
Despite losing twice by 2-0 scores Saturday, Notre Dame coach Jeff Worley was fairly pleased with his squad's play and the way the entire tournament went.
"We played two good teams. We're battling some injuries now and we had some girls out of town for various things, so overall I can't feel too bad about the weekend," said Worley, whose team won its Friday game. "It was a very good tournament. All the teams in town were very impressed with the facilities and the way the tournament was run."
